Homeopathic Remedies

Helping the body's natural ability to heal

Homeopathic medicine is a natural healing system which was introduced in 1810 by Dr. Samuel Hahnemann. Homeopathic remedies are highly diluted forms of plants, minerals, and other natural substances; each remedy is prepared in a series of dilutions and succussions, or shaking. According to the Law of Similars, a homeopathic practitioner selects a remedy which at full strength would produce the symptom being treated. The diluted remedy stimulates the body's natural ability to heal.

Homeopathic remedies are available as liquid tinctures, tablets, granules, or ointments. All homeopathic remedies in the United States are prepared under strict FDA guidelines. Each remedy must list at least one medical indication. Remedies are available over the counter at natural health stores or from homeopathic practitioners. For ailments more severe than a cold, flu, or muscle strain, the correct homeopathic remedy should be prescribed by a doctor or trained practitioner.

Homeopathic remedy terms

Constitutional remedy: a single remedy which treats multiple symptoms in the same individual. This type of remedy is usually indicated for chronic illness.

Modality: a situation which alleviates or worsens a symptom. For example, a headache may be more severe in cold weather, but less severe in the morning. Each remedy treats a symptom with particular modalities.

Nosode: a remedy for a specific disease, prepared from highly diluted tissue affected by that disease.

Potency: the strength of a homeopathic remedy. Remedies with the highest dilutions are considered the strongest remedies. A potency is indicated on the product label by a letter and number, such as 6X or 200C.

Polychrest: a homeopathic remedy which treats a wide range of symptoms. Polychrests are usually the oldest remedies, such as Calcarea carbonica or Nux vomica,  which have gained their reputations over many years.

Tissue salt: one of 12 remedies prepared from minerals which are essential for health.
